Round-the-World in a month
"Because each new fragment of evidence on the diminished size of the world becomes more
and more important in our today, Vogue reports on Pan American's new round-the-world flight.
For the first time in history of travel you may buy, in New York, a ticket for a
round-the-world flight; you may fly under the aegis of a single company; see for yourself,
hear for yourself, within a month's space, how much of the rest of the world lives and thinks.
Because this seemed important to us, Vogue sent its feature editor. Allene Talmey and staff
photographer, Irving Penn, to fly, to see, to listen, and to report. The first chapter of this
report is on the next eighteen pages."
For the American women, Allene described her travel wardrobe, passport and inoculation
requirements, cost of her airline tickets and traveler check needs. She commented on the
dress of the various countries she visited, foreign habits compared to those of the US and the
differences in the importance of education that she observed as she flew round-the-world.
Irvine Penn photographed the people, places and events that would be of interest to
Vogue's readers in the US.
It is interesting to note that the cities of the world were no longer being measured by
the distance in miles between them but by the time it took to fly from one to another.
Commercial air transportation was diminishing the size of the world.
